Hitting the road this Summer for a little 'vaca'? Well, here's some intelligence on how to get the best deal for a hotel room (or just get a room!)
First, you're going to get the best rate by calling the hotel's local number, instead of the (800) reservations number. Don't ask for the reservations desk; ask for the manager on duty, or the director of sales (they have the authority to negotiate a better room rate.)
Next, rooms are always more expensive in the morning. The best time to make a reservation is after 6 PM- that's when they wipe the no-show reservations from their computers (bigger cities? maybe as early as 4 PM.)
And finally, everything is negotiable- everything. If the parking garage is overpriced, and it looks half empty, offer less than the daily rate. Plan to make a lot of phone calls? Then ask for a daily flat fee for long distance and/or local calls (most hotels offer these, but you do have to ask for them.)
