FAIRBANKS, Alaska (AP) – Alaska school officials have discussed a potential update to a district policy concerning cultural dress at graduations.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reported Wednesday that the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District took up the issue at its May 21 meeting after a student was denied permission to wear traditional Alaska Native attire during the West Valley High School commencement May 18.

Adrienne Aakaluk Titus says her son was told prior to commencement that he would have to remove a kuspuk he wore with his graduation robe.

Titus says she spoke with an administrator before the ceremony and was told wearing the garment was not permitted by the school.

A board member apologized and an official says the board will work on a new policy for the next school year.
