Alaska to delay some Medicaid payments as funding runs out

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) – Alaska’s funding for Medicaid is set to run out before the end of June, causing several hospitals and health care providers to go unpaid until July.

KTOO Public Media in Juneau reports the state Department of Health and Social Services will begin delaying some payments this week to large providers that don’t solely rely on Medicaid funding to stay in operation.

The department has typically paid Medicaid bills within a week.

Department officials say their aim is to cause the least amount of harm to the smaller providers that are reliant on Medicaid funding. The department will sort the provider bills and give priority to the smaller entities.

Alaska State Hospital and Nursing Home Association President Becky Hultberg says Medicaid was short-funded and lawmakers failed to fully fund a supplement.
