Man missing after boat sinks in southwest Alaska

DILLINGHAM, Alaska (AP) – A man is missing from a boat that sank in southwest Alaska.

Alaska State Troopers say 59-year-old John Phillips of Juneau was on a fishing boat that sank Wednesday in Nushagak Bay near the village of Clark’s Point.

Thirty-one-year-old Jeb Phillips of Petersburg and a teenage boy also were on the boat and were able to escape the vessel.

The Coast Guard says the fishing vessel Amanda C rescued two people from the water and transferred them to troopers.

Troopers, volunteers in private boats and a Coast Guard helicopter searched for Phillips. The Coast Guard late Wednesday suspended its search.

Clark’s Point is on the northeaster shore of Nushagak Bay. The village of 55 is 15 miles (24.14 kilometers) from Dillingham and 337 miles (542 kilometers) southwest of Anchorage.
