WASILLA, Alaska (AP) – A 39-year-old Palmer man with two previous convictions for eluding was arrested after a high-speed chase.

Billy Joe Jones was jailed Tuesday night on suspicion of felony eluding, assault, leaving the scene of an accident and driving with a revoked license.

Alaska State Troopers shortly before 9 p.m. checked on a sport utility vehicle parked on a rural Palmer road with a man slumped over the wheel.

Troopers say the driver woke up, drove off and led officers on a miles-long chase toward Wasilla with speeds exceeded 100 mph.

Wasilla police deployed spikes that deflated the SUV’s passenger-side front tire. The SUV continued on, ran a red light and crashed into a pickup.

Troopers say Jones finally crashed through a fence, fled on foot into woods and was arrested.
