STONY RIVER, Alaska (AP) – Alaska State Troopers are conducting an investigation of a death in a tiny rural community that was called in as a possible suicide.

Troopers say 66-year-old Deacon Evans died Wednesday in Stony River, a village of 36 about 225 miles (362 kilometers) west of Anchorage.

Troopers from St. Mary’s and Aniak reached Stony River on Thursday. They concluded the death was suspicious and called in additional investigators.

Troopers now say the death was not a suicide and was “purposefully staged” to appear as if Evans had taken his life.

Troopers have a suspect in the case as they continue to investigate.
